’16 llegó a Anime Matsuri, el grupo se encontraba promocionando su sencillo número 60 'Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi / Endless Sky / One and Only.' A-To-J: ¿Se están divirtiendo en Texas? Morning Musume。 Morning Musume。 ’16: ¡Sí! Yaaaay! “Fun!” A-To-J: ¿Qué han preparado para esta presentación? なんていうんですか?「Up and down」(上下)! Kanon Suzuki: Eso no existe en Japón... Masaki Sato: ¡Sí! Ah... “Keifon?” Mizuki Fukumura: “Keifon?” Ayumi Ishida: ¡Bungee inverso! Masaki Sato: Lo hicimos. Ayumi Ishida: ¡Así fue! Morning Musume。 ’16: ¡Muy alta! Ayumi Ishida: ¡Todos los juegos eran espantosos! Masaki Sato: ¡Fue realmente espantoso! Masaki Sato: Yo pensé "Si no me sostengo fuerte... (Risas.) Sakura Oda: Esta mañana comimos pan tostado con pudín... Ayumi Ishida: “¿Pudín?” A-To-J: ¿Pudín de Pan? Kanon Suzuki: Ah, creo que es eso. Uhm... Su voz. Morning Musume。 ’16 excepto Mizuki: “Rica" ¡Una celebridad! (Risas.) Erina Ikuta: ¡Y mantequilla!
Mizuki Fukumura: Wow, ¡Eso es asombroso! El final del segundo coro dice "We can be so happy in life" y esa parte, viene en Katakana. えっと…「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(野中さんに)歌って…(笑) Sakura Oda: Esto es algo muy persona para mi, Sakura Oda... Umm... “You have a song that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (Hacia Miki) Por favor, canta… (Risas) 野中美希:「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(完璧な発音で) Miki Nonaka: “You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (Con pronunciación perfecta) 小田さくら:「This!」(これ!) Sakura Oda: ¡Eso! A-To-J: Hello! Kanon Suzuki: ¿Tú quieres ganar? Haruna Iikubo: (En voz baja) Tour mundial… It was the third time for Morning Musume。 to appear in the US (following Anime Expo in 2009 and their New York concert in 2015), but the first time for the twelfth generation members. They performed at the convention to a full audience and also held a Q&A panel as well as several autograph sessions over the weekend. This event also marked the last overseas appearance of ninth generation member Kanon Suzuki as she will be graduating from Morning Musume。 '16 at the close of their Spring Tour. Morning Musume。 '16 originally formed as simply Morning Musume。in 1997 and quickly became famous for their hit songs, such as "LOVE Machine" and "Renai Revolution 21", and their changing line-up marked by "generations". After over a decade on the Japanese Pop music scene, they found a new surge of popularity with the addition of the ninth generation members (who currently make up the senior-most members of the group) and the single "One Two Three" (2012). Following a string of Oricon chart-topping singles, it was decided that Morning Musume。would change its name to Morning Musume。 '14 in 2014 and would continue the name changes each year. At the time of Anime Matsuri X, Morning Musume。 '16 was promoting their sixtieth single "Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi / ENDLESS SKY / One and Only". They have since announced their sixty-first single which will release on May 11th. A-To-J: Are you having fun in Texas so far? Morning Musume。 Morning Musume。 ’16: Yes, yaaaay! “Fun!” A-To-J: Compared to your last visit to New York, how is Texas different? Haruna Iikubo: When we went to New York it was winter time and very cold but this time the weather is very nice and we can walk around to many places in light clothes. It is also very quiet here and it’s easy to take walks to places like the park and the supermarket. A-To-J: What did you do to prepare for this live? Erina Ikuta: We rehearsed and we synchronized our moves for the live. This is our first time having a real live as 12 so we worked together and figured out who will cover where Riho Sayashi was in the songs. Sakura Oda: We also made sure we could speak a little bit of English. A-To-J: Have you had time to do anything fun since you’ve been here? なんていうんですか?「Up and down」(上下)! Masaki Sato: We got to go to an amusement park. And listen! What do you call it… “Up and Down”… spinny… Kanon Suzuki: It doesn’t exist in Japan… Sakura Oda: Kind of like an attraction? Masaki Sato: Yes! Really “keifon?” Mizuki Fukumura: “keifon?” Ayumi Ishida: She wants to say that she was scared. Masaki Sato: Yes, it was very scary… also, Masaki and Ayumi Ishida went on… “Byuun, Bayoon!” Ayumi Ishida: Reverse bungee! Masaki Sato: We did that. Before we did it there was an airplane flying and it felt very close… Ayumi Ishida: That’s how high it went! Masaki Sato: Yes, very high! It was very fun though. This was the first amusement park I got to go to this year so it was very fun! Ayumi Ishida: The levels were higher than the attractions in Japan… MM: Very high! Ayumi Ishida: They were all scary! Masaki Sato: It was really terrifying! Kanon Suzuki: I got too frightened and gripped too hard so I still have muscle pains… Masaki Sato: I thought “if I don’t hold on forever, I’ll die!” so when I got off my hands were in pain. Haruna Ogata: Since this is my first time overseas this was my first time also eating food here in America; the bagels and granola were tasty. Haruna Iikubo: The hotel’s bread is very delicious… A-To-J: Are there any interesting foods you were able to try since you’ve been here? Sakura Oda: This morning we ate french toast in pudding… Ayumi Ishida: “Pudding?” A-To-J: Bread pudding? Kanon Suzuki: Ah, I think that’s it. Sakura Oda: I saw it for the first time, it was very delicious but it was my first time seeing bread without shape and it felt very strange. Haruna Ogata: The people here in America said that they bite into whole apples and I was surprised to see so many apples uncut there. Mizuki Fukumura: I went shopping and I found something called avocado oil. I usually only use olive oil… My dad loves oils so if I thought if I buy him avocado he would eat it? Drink it? I’m excited to cook with it! 飯窪春菜: あの、お嬢様なんですよ…(枯れ声) Haruna Iikubo: (in a hoarse voice) Um… she’s a princess… (Implying she’s rich) [Editor’s Note: Haruna Iikubo was still getting over an illness at the time of both this interview and their activities at Anime Matsuri.] 他のメンバー: 声が…(笑) The other members: Oh no her voice… MM except for Mizuki: “Rich”! A celebrity! 飯窪春菜: 譜久村さんはオリーブオイルしか使ったことないけど、大体(のメンバー)はサラダ油です(笑) Haruna Iikubo: Fukumura-san has only used olive oil but the most of the other members use vegetable oil (Laughs) 生田衣梨奈: あとバター! Erina Ikuta: And butter!
A-To-J: What kind of challenges do you come into performing overseas? Haruka Kudo: We ask for the audience to cheer at lives within our songs and we say “oi oi” or “motto! (more!)” as well as “minna de ikuyo! (let’s go everyone!)” and we had to change them into English. It was a challenge to use words that we are not used to and say it rhythmically within the song. Ayumi Ishida: The number one thing is we’re going to be singing a song that’s fully in English called “One and Only”. In Japan, even if we sing in English they just think “Oh, they can do English” but when we’re here at the real deal I feel like we get tested in our pronunciation… So we had Miki Nonaka who is fluent in English teach us and we want to show our fans our perfected pronunciation. Miki Nonaka: I can speak English but this is it was pressure for me since I haven’t been here (in the USA) in 5 years. I watched TV shows in English before coming. Mizuki Fukumura: Wow, that’s amazing! A-To-J: So you have a song that’s completely English called “One and Only”, what are your thoughts about the song? Specifically, was it hard for you to learn the English and to be comfortable with it? Mizuki Fukumura: When I first saw the lyrics card it was startling since it was all in English. We started all panicky and thought “How are we going to do this?” However we had Nonaka-chan teach us and we listened to the songs ourselves and studied it. The hardest parts were when there were easy terms that we knew in a row. The ending of the 2nd chorus has the lyrics “We can be so happy in life” and that part turns into Katakana (implying the pronunciation sounds very Japanese). It turns into “We kyan bii so happi inn laifu” and it was hard to make it sound more English. Maria Makino: I learned English in Japan but I’m not very good at reading or singing it in proper pronunciation… There was an English song teacher and we had the teacher sing it so we can record it and listen to it for practice. The term I had the hardest time was the English word “style”… I couldn’t pronounce it as “Sty-le” and I had to sing “Sty-le” rhythmically so it was hard and I practiced it a lot. When I recorded the song, the teacher told me “you’ve improved” but I wasn’t assigned to that part of the song. えっと…「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(野中さんに)歌って…(笑) Sakura Oda: This is very particular pinpoint for me, Sakura Oda… Umm… “You have a song that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (To Miki) Please sing it… (Laughs) 野中美希:「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(完璧な発音で) Miki Nonaka: “You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (With perfect pronunciation) 小田さくら:「This!」(これ!) Sakura Oda: This! Sakura Oda: This part was so hard and I received this part so I try my best not to stutter when singing it. Kanon Suzuki: The batteries of my music player drained quicker than usual. A-To-J: Hello!Project has a very extensive catalogue of music, Is there any song from another group you would like to perform? 生田衣梨奈:「出すぎた杭は打たれない」(アンジュルム)という曲があって、あの曲は二組に分かれて大人数同士のパフォーマンスを見せるところがあるんですけど、℃-uteさん、Juice=Juiceで5人でやってもちっちゃいフォーメーションになっちゃうと思うんですけど、この12人が9人負けない迫力を出せばアンジュルムに勝てる気がします(笑) Erina Ikuta: There’s a song called “Desugita Kui wa Utarenai” (by ANGERME) and there’s a part where they perform split up into two groups. Even if ℃-ute and Juice=Juice do it with 5 people, I think the formation will look small. With 12 people (in Morning Musume。 ’16) I feel like we can be as powerful as 9 people (in ANGERME) and we can win. Kanon Suzuki: You want to win? Erina Ikuta: I want to win; also even if Morning Musume。 does fast songs we all sing the lyrics together so I want to try a fast song where we split in teams. Maria Makino: I, Maria Makino, did ballet for 10 years. In ANGERME’s song “Otome no Gyakushuu”, there is a part where Maho Aikawa dances ballet in the middle of the song so I want to dance that part too. A-To-J: Specifically for the 12th generation members, what do you love about being in Morning Musume。? Haruna Ogata: The happiest thing was I received speaking lines in the song “Oh my wish!” I was very happy that I received this along with Akane Haga. When I sing the song, I’m always excited about it. Maria Makino: Since I love Sayumi Michishige, even if I didn’t get to perform with Sayumi Michishige, I’m happy that I got to join when she was still a part of Morning Musume。. Also I’m happy that I get to be on stage and perform with my seniors and the Morning Musume。 I saw on TV. Haga Akane: When I was in my first year of middle school, I was in the drama club. When I participated in the culture festival (a festival done yearly in many schools in Japan) I was in charge of the props… I wasn’t able to do big roles but entering Morning Musume。 I was given a chance to act in musicals and act in front of a big front. It was very fun. Miki Nonaka: I’m very happy that I get to communicate to people around the world like this with songs and dances. I’m happiest that we get to communicate because we are here today and through our live will be doing later. A-To-J: Is there anything you would like to do to reach out to your foreign fans more? Haruna Iikubo: (In a small voice) World tour… (Laughs) 譜久村聖: 声が…(笑) Mizuki Fukumura: Her voice… (Laughs) 小田さくら: (飯窪春菜さんの)声が出なくなっちゃった!(笑) Sakura Oda: Her (Haruna Iikubo) voice is hoarse! Haruna Iikubo: I want to do a world tour. I’m very happy that many fans around the world support us so I want to have more places to be able to show them a live performance. A-To-J: Considering your major accomplishments in the group lately, what is your next big goal in Japan? Mizuki Fukumura: There are many cool songs from Morning Musume。 so I want to have more variation and to be seen more. In Hello!Project, Kobushi Factory has a very hype vibe and Country Girls have a very cute vibe and I want more of that kind of variety. Also since there are currently 12 members in Morning Musume。 ’16, I would like us to be a group that shows off the characteristics of each member more. A-To-J: Lastly, do you have any special message you would like to give to your foreign fans? Haruna Ogata: Like I said, this is my first time coming overseas and I’m sure there are people that have seen me for the first time… It makes me very happy hearing fans call me “Oharu” or “Haachin” and other nicknames. I’m excited for the live and I would like to come overseas again with everyone so I want to tell the fans to please wait for us. Kanon Suzuki: I’ve come overseas and performed at New York before as well… At that time I was very touched by the fans of course as well as the people just walking on the streets because many of them express their feelings straightforward. It’s very cool and they don’t hold back, it makes me happy that they express their straightforward feelings to us and I will live respecting those kinds of fans! (Laughs) I want to tell them that I respect them. Mizuki Fukumura: Since we are active in Japan I don’t think there are many opportunities we get to meet foreign fans. However when we do get to meet them, they cheer a lot for us and tell us that they check our blogs normally and some even come to Japan… There are many things I realized after coming here so I felt that from now on I want to be able to connect more with everyone around the world. KOTO took the stage at the 2-day event "3D LIVE REVOLUTION X LIVE PLUS" at Taiwan's Pipe Live Music and shared the stage with several idols from both Taiwan and Japan! This included a special 2-man live with Taiwanese idol, Tira! The crowd was hyped and energetic and she won over many Taiwanese idol fans and we hope that she will eventually win over the hearts of many more fans worldwide! KOTO is a solo recording artist with a unique style and sound that has made her a front runner in the indie idol scene. She recently released her first album "Platonic Planet" and has been very active recording and performing in Japan. You can follow her on social media for more information (links at the bottom of the article) and look forward to more news on her in the future from A-To-J Connections! You can find an earlier interview we conducted with KOTO here. You can also find a live report from an earlier show we covered in Japan here. We also will close out this half of the interview with a summary of some recent KOTO news for those who perhaps find it hard to get information on her outside of Japan! [Part 1 of the interview can be found here.] A-To-J: Your songs are in Japanese but how do you think they’re accepted throughout the world? KOTO: My songs are very electronic… I think people that like cute things really like my songs! So I think people that like Harujuku and Harajuku fashion like my songs. The songs are also fast paced so I think people that like high tension songs like them as well. This is also why I want to go to places that have “kawaii” culture. A-To-J: How do you think the audience in Taiwan will react to your style of music? KOTO: As you saw from the reactions yesterday, I don’t think there are a lot of songs of mine that require you to use your voice (to cheer). Other idols have “mixes”… I’m pretty sure I surprised them by dancing all of the sudden but they cheered along with me and it made me very happy! A-To-J: Which country do you think will accept your songs the most? (Other than Japan) A-To-J: KOTO: What do you think? A-To-J: Me? I actually think America would be very accepting since we have different events such as conventions that are Japanese pop culture themed and there are a lot of people that like anime and “kawaii” fashion. KOTO - Taiwan Live @ Pipe Live Music A-To-J: Is there any other language you would like to perform in? KOTO: There are other languages I would want to perform in but I’m very bad at anything other than Japanese, but I would want to try in English with proper pronunciation. A-To-J: Please tell us about today’s fashion. KOTO: For my costume, I thought of Taiwan and wore a China dress. A-To-J: Where did you get your costume? KOTO: This is from a web store called “Kawaii Youfukuya-san (Kari)”. I also have attached hair bun covers. As for my personal clothes, I’m wearing my original goods. A-To-J: Are your original goods made for here or did you bring them from Japan? KOTO: They’re sold and made in Japan but we did bring some for this live. A-To-J: It has your name on the hoodie! KOTO: Yes, along with my Twitter handle name. A-To-J: How did you choose this Twitter handle name? KOTO: I actually made a mistake for the name… I wanted to put “Kocchan” in romaji but I ended up putting in “Koccyan” (pronounced as “Kokkyan”) But I submitted this username and I couldn’t change it… So now it’s this. A-To-J: What about the numbers? (925) A-To-J: その数字は?(925のこと) KOTO: The number is for my birthday, September 25th (9/25). A-To-J: I thought at first the “cyan” part meant cyan as in blue and that you liked blue a lot. KOTO: Oh no, it was just a mistake! 間違えちゃった(笑) A-To-J: It’s ok though, the mistake is very cute. Oh, and your nails are very cute too! KOTO: I put pandas on them. Also its winter time so I did my “knit nails”. (Nails that are shaped like knit sweaters) KOTO: A-To-J: Not every artist gets to perform overseas, how are you going to use this experience once you get back to Japan? KOTO: I want to be able to perform and be able to convey my feelings through my performance to anyone in any country. A-To-J: To help accomplish your goals, what can your fans do to support you? KOTO: Since I release a lot of info on my Twitter, I would like them to follow my Twitter. I upload photos and information about my lives so I want them to see it. Since it’s difficult for overseas fans to come to my lives, they can check out my YouTube channel or buy my album from Amazon. For people in Japan, since I have a lot of lives, I hope they come to at least one of them. A-To-J: How many lives do you normally do? KOTO: I do about 20 lives in one month! The most I’ve had in one month is 32 lives. A-To-J: Wow, that must be hard and you still go to school? KOTO: Yes, I’m in my second year of high school so I have to go to school as well. A-To-J: To accomplish your goals, is there anything we can do as A-To-J Connections? KOTO: Since I want more people to know about my lives and songs, I’m very happy you guys are interviewing me. I would like you guys to spread more about me to the rest of the world. A-To-J: Where should the overseas fans go to check out more things about you? KOTO: On YouTube, I have a channel called “KOTO Channel” and I also have a homepage, Twitter, Instagram and Cheerz. KOTO: Thank you for reading this interview and I hope you take interest in me. OTOTOY is a site that releases music files of different formats from a variety of Japanese artists. The mini album is titled "Tenkomori Mini Album" and consists of all the songs from her series of monthly releases of songs composed by Kissa Sasaki. This online package also includes jacket photos, lyrics, notes by Kazumi Namba as well as a radio sound file that includes discussions on various topics from KOTO and Kissa Sasaki. Also in recent KOTO news, a shop called "KOTOSHOP" just opened on March 13th within a cosmetic shop called "ABC Cosme Store" in Harajuku Takeshita Doori. It's a special temporary pop-up shop. The shops sells some of her CDs and live DVDs as well as t-shirts from her lives and her hoodie (pictures of the hoodie can be seen above). These are all items that are typically only sold at her live events so this is an exciting development for those who are not able to attend. There has been no official tweet or notice, but fans who have asked the KOTO staff have said that they are planning on keeping the shop open until the end of August. A-To-J: Do you have any interesting things that have happened here in Taiwan? KOTO: At the convenience store, I bought one thing and they gave me another for free. That doesn’t happen much in Japan so I was surprised! A-To-J: What did you buy there? KOTO: I bought souvenirs to bring back to Japan. I also bought cough drops for myself. A-To-J: What kind of things did you buy as souvenirs? KOTO: I bought things I can give out as goodies for people that come to my live in Japan. A-To-J: Oh! That’s very interesting! A-To-J: えっ! A-To-J: Did you encounter any obstacles here in Taiwan? KOTO: I’m not very good at kanji (Chinese characters)… but kanji is everywhere here. I’m not good at writing and reading so it was really hard for me! A-To-J: But at least you can use English! KOTO: I’m not very good at that either!! (Laughs) KOTO: 英語も下手っぴなんです!!(笑) A-To-J: What are some of the differences you’ve noticed between Taiwan and Japan? KOTO: It seems very similar but it isn’t… The smells? The food and flavors are different and are spiced differently. A-To-J: Have you had Taiwanese food before? Such as “xiao long bao” (soup dumplings) A-To-J: KOTO: Oh yes, I’ve had xiao long bao before!! A-To-J: What about stinky tofu? KOTO: No I haven’t!! A-To-J: Are you planning to try some? KOTO: No!! (Laughs) KOTO: ううん!(笑) A-To-J: Have you had any tapioca milk tea? KOTO: Yes, it was very good! Oh! Now I know what the big difference between Taiwan and Japan is. Taiwan is very lively at night or at least that’s what I saw at the night markets and I was very surprised. A-To-J: Please tell us what you think about the food here. KOTO: The soy sauce type flavoring is different from Japan, it was a bit sweeter than what I’m used to. A-To-J: Probably because Chinese and Japanese soy sauce is different. KOTO: Oh, I see. I thought it was going to be salty and it was sweet so I was like “Oh!” but it was very delicious. A-To-J: How did you decide on your set list for the Taiwan live? KOTO: I didn’t choose in Japan and I chose the set list once I got to Taiwan. The first day I had 15 minutes so I performed songs nonstop, back to back. I chose “Pastel Passport” to be one of the first songs since it’s a journey-themed song. A-To-J: What did you do to prepare for this live? KOTO: For this Taiwan live, I bought a new costume and I’m wearing it right now. It’s a China dress! A-To-J: Don’t you have a lot of China dresses? KOTO: Yes, this is my 4th or 5th one. A-To-J: Why do you have so many? KOTO: They’re all cute and there are different shapes and sizes. I wanted all different kinds so now I have many. A-To-J: Even in your previous YouTube video you wore a China dress! KOTO: I wanted to buy one here in Taiwan but I haven’t been able to go shopping for one… KOTO - Platonic Planet MV A-To-J: Do you listen to any Taiwanese songs? KOTO: I don’t really know of any… A-To-J: What do you usually listen to? KOTO: There’s a Japanese artist named “Shiina Pikarin” and I listen to her songs a lot. A-To-J: Do you plan to do any sightseeing or souvenir shopping after your lives? KOTO: Today I’ve been buying souvenirs when I have the time but I don’t have enough I want to go buy some more. I also haven’t had much time to eat Taiwanese food so I want to eat things such as xiao long bao and pepper buns (Hujiao bing). I also want to eat shaved ice, the very fluffy kind and also tapioca! A-To-J: And you already went to a night market right? KOTO: I did! But I only got to go to one… so I want to go to more! A-To-J: After you finish this live in Taiwan, where would you like to perform overseas next? KOTO: I would like to go to America next! I want to go to Russia as well because I heard there is “kawaii” culture there. Look forward to the second half of this interview, and more information on KOTO coming very soon from A-To-J Connections! KOTO - Omatsuri GALAXY Live MVOn January 7th, 2016, I got a chance to go to an event called “SOLOxSOLOxSOLO@Hatsudai DOORS” which is located about 10 minutes from Shinjuku station if you use the Keio New Line. Like the event title says, it took place on an underground stage called Hatsudai DOORS. This particular event had 10 acts and the girls that were there all performed solo (once again referenced in the event name). There were different types of performers present and the audience was mixed with fans or “wotas” of different idols. Like my previous experience with a KOTO live at Daikanyama LOOP, the wotas switched around depending on who was performing. This meant that when it was time for KOTO’s stage, all the KOTO wotas or the “Kotora’s/Koto-ler’s” moved forward. It’s actually quite nice because the current performer’s wotas also lead the crowd and if you came to see a certain act, you can get up close to see them perform. This actually really helps me particularly as I am 4’11” and always have a hard time seeing when it comes to bigger concerts. It really makes you realize that the wota are courteous and friendly to each other even if they support different idols. Shortly after the previous set finished (Which was an artist named SAWA, someone that collaborates and composes some of KOTO’s music.) KOTO skipped onto the stage to say hi to the crowd. She greeted everyone and had small talk before starting her live. Unlike the big idol concerts I’ve experienced before, it was actually possible for the fans to respond to her MC and have a conversation with her while she was on the stage. After a short MC, she quickly jumped into her 20 minute set. She started out with “17Android”, which is different from most of her songs because it was composed by the idol and composer, SAWA who was mentioned earlier. Owing to its origins, it’s more of a pop song with hints of electro sound. By comparison KOTO’s songs are usually much heavier in the electronic sounds. This song was made in time for her 17th birthday live, “KOTO Oneman~Genjitsutouhi na seventeen~ which she held last year on 9/25/15. The crowd warmed up as they danced along to her sharp moves and cute sweet voice. Even from a slight distance, I felt overwhelmed by the strong performance and the impact was still as much as when I saw her up close before. She followed up this up with “Kirai Returns”, one of her recent works with Kissa Sasaki, her main producer that also has his own group, “Recoride”. The song is one of the six songs they have been releasing monthly starting in September 2014 and is the second release out of the six. This is also the second series of songs with him. The songs in this series are different stylistically from each release and as a fan it’s fun to see KOTO try new styles of music and also choreography. Her most recent release at the time “Omatsuri GALAXY” sounds like a Japanese festival song and has Japanese “soran” moves which are big movements which almost represent pulling and throwing things. The first release of the series has easy to mimic lyrics and a “parapara” style dance to it which was a popular dance style from the late 70s that including simple side steps with complex arm movements. Just like the other Kissa Sasaki produced songs, it has that unique retro electronic sound to it, reminiscent of a retro video game soundtrack or 8-bit music. To me, I feel that the song is a bit mellower than her other upbeat songs but that didn’t change how powerful and fast her performance was. Catching her breath after two songs in a row, she talked about the reason why she chose the first song, “17Android” for her setlist. She explained that since the composer of the song, SAWA, is also one of the idols in the event, she wanted to perform it there. Even in SAWA’s MC, she talked about how happy she was to see KOTO for the first time this year. The cutest part was when she described how KOTO came up to her saying “SAWA-san~ Please have these clothes that I can’t wear!” and the crowd laughed at their interaction that showed just how close they were. SAWA herself also has a very unique voice and her songs are fun to listen to so it’s great they get to be in the same idol events and collaborate with each other. KOTO also talked about how she had made her nails new and shiny with colorful designs and pandas. After her MC, she went straight back to two upbeat songs. The third song of her set was “Valentine’s Ballerina”. My favorite parts of the choreography for this song are when she does movements like she’s making desserts for Valentine’s but since this is KOTO’s dancing, these gestures are so intense!! One of the movements is her mixing a bowl and she REALLY mixes whatever is in that bowl very well!! It always makes me giggle when I see it and that part is my favorite to watch. With that said, you have no idea how happy I was to finally see it live! Another favorite part of mine is when she does ballerina moves, showing an elegant side to her performance, then goes straight back to her signature super sharp movements. Her fourth, and last, song was “Otokonoko-chan”. This song is my favorite song and I could tell from the hype they had for this song that it was also a favorite of the fans. Everyone excitedly got ready as they heard the intro because there is a “parapara” section in the beginning that a lot of the fans like to follow. Besides this this song also has a chorus which has fun, easy to follow choreography as well as a cute part where the fans shout “piyo piyo!” (I personally love this part because in the song there is a chick sound and I am also a huge bird lover!) I don’t know if this has anything to do with the fact that KOTO has a bird as a pet, but if it is I think that’s very cute. The fans and KOTO synced up as they danced and cheered altogether. It was the perfect hype song to end her set with. After she finished her songs she quickly told everyone to visit her at the selling booth after the event and ran off waving goodbye. The twenty minutes went by so quickly that it made you long for more, but at the same it was a satisfying set of songs to watch her perform.
It’s very clear why these Kotora’s/Koto-ler’s are so passionate and try their hardest to go each one of her sets and live events. The energy in her lives is both insane and unbelievable. It’s so unbelievable that you get the feeling that you have to go see it again to make sure what you just witnessed was real! She is truly a gem within the underground idol scene and I wish I lived in Japan so I could watch her up close before she becomes bigger and begins to attract an equally bigger crowd. Other than that I practice regularly. A-To-J: Are there any overseas venues you want to perform at? KOTO: Right now I’m usually told it sounds electronic or “piko piko” [Used to describe 8-bit or electronic songs] so I think that’s what it sounds like… What else? KOTO’s Manager: From KOTO’s ideas, we do things like put in the sound of a Japanese koto and it’s a very free, original product… A-To-J: In your album [Titled “Platonic Planet”] that you released last year, what was the song you had the most fun working on? KOTO: The last song of the album, “Cinderella Syndrome” is the first song I got to write the lyrics for and it’s the only I have written lyrics for so far. I was very nervous but I’m happy that many people listened to it. A-To-J: Do you want to compose songs or write lyrics again in the future? KOTO: Yes I’ve been wanting to but haven’t had the chance… I’m hoping sometime this year! A-To-J: You have some music videos; please tell us of any behind the scene stories. KOTO: There’s a MV for “Platonic Planet” and it had an “’80s” theme. We wanted it to look old so we filmed it with me wearing a headset. I guess because KOTO’s dance is intense, the headset fell off! (Laughs) This happened many times and we kept saying: “Oh no!” So whenever I was wearing the headset I had to tone down the dancing. A-To-J: How are you preparing for the live in Taiwan? ネイルを新しくしてパンダを入れました(笑) KOTO: I’ve been thinking of a costume that looks Japanese and I also put pandas on my nails! I just recently did the nails, so I put decided to put pandas in the design. (Laughs) A-To-J: かわいいですね!(笑) A-To-J: It’s very cute! A-To-J: Have there been any difficulties in your career so far? KOTO: I work alone and I have difficulty talking to people because I get anxious when I communicate with others… So when the wait time is long in my dressing room, I don’t know what to do and I just stay in there alone most of the time… Recently I’ve been able to talk to many people so it’s getting more fun. A-To-J: Are there any artists you are close to? KOTO: I don’t know who to say when I’m asked that (Laughs) Compared to last year and the year before that, I’m happy that I’ve been able to talk to many different people. A-To-J: There are a lot of artists performing in today’s event, what do you think is the difference between these kinds of events and your one-man lives? KOTO: For “Battle of the Bands” type events, there are people that come for KOTO and people that come for others… I try to make it fun for the people that have come to see KOTO and I try to leave an impact for the people that have seen me for the first time. For one-man lives everyone comes to see KOTO so I get really nervous but the atmosphere is very warm and fun. A-To-J: Where should overseas fans go to check your recent information? KOTO: On YouTube I have a channel called “KOTO Channel”. There are music videos of my songs as well as performance videos. My new songs get uploaded there as well so I think you can see quite a lot there… There are also videos that were uploaded before my channel was made so if you search in my name, “KOTO”, you should find some performance videos as well. I would like everyone to watch me performing and moving. I also have a Twitter… and recently started an Instagram account. So if you go on my Instagram, Twitter as well as a phone app called “CHEERZ” you can see how I am usually and find out about upcoming lives so I would like overseas people to check it out as well! A-To-J: Lastly, please give a message to our overseas fans and readers. KOTO: To the people that have found out about me for the first time in this interview and the people that have found me through videos and such, we can’t meet each other much because we’re far away but thank you for watching KOTO! I will try my best to go overseas so when the time comes, please come see me! Also if you have time, please come visit Japan! I’m looking forward to it! We here at A-To-J Connections had the distinct pleasure of interviewing the brand new group callme. When we were presented with the opportunity to review their debut album, “Who is callme?”, we knew absolutely nothing about them. Needless to say, we were swept away by how amazing their album was. Being given the opportunity to interview them shortly after that was an immense honor. We hope that you enjoy the interview as much as we did. They are a very fun and unique group who we suspect you can expect great things out of. callme debuted January of this year and consists of three members who were previously in Dorothy Little Happy: Ruuna Akimoto, Mimori Tominaga and Koumi Hayasaka. They first appeared as callme at JAM the Field vol. 7 at Tsutaya O-East in February this year and performed for the first time in April at the same location. Since then they have performed multiple times and held multiple events. Their first album (which released in October) is a testament to their talent, and shows us that they have a very bright future. A-To-J: What are some of your favorite music artists? KOUMI: I like Fall Out Boy! MIMORI: I really like Miley Cyrus ever since I was in elementary school when I was watching her TV show and was listening to her songs. RUUNA: I like Maroon 5 a lot, when we saw them live in Japan, my love for them grew even more and they’re an artist that I respect a lot. A-To-J: Are there any groups or artists you’d particularly like to collaborate with? KOUMI: I want to collaborate with Becky G. since we’re the same age. I’ve very interested to see what would happen if an idol group and artist of the same age collaborated. A-To-J: Are there any other idol groups you look up to and respect? RUUNA: Within Japan, we think greatly of Perfume. They’re also 3 person group so we learn a lot from especially their staging. A-To-J: Are there any other music groups that you look up to and respect in a similar fashion? MIMORI: I play piano currently and there’s someone I imitate while playing… There are quite a few but I specifically imitate John Lennon a lot of the times. A-To-J: Are there any other genres you might want to try in the future? MIMORI: Right now we’re trying out many genres but we haven’t tried country or country pop yet. I listen to country so I want to do it with callme as well. A-To-J: Which countries do you feel would appreciate your sound the most? KOUMI: We would like to go to places that do Japanese festivals/events such as the US and specifically Los Angeles, as well as the UK. We would like to spread our music to not just places like America but to other parts of Asia as well. A-To-J: If you had to choose one foreign country to go to first, which one would it be? MIMORI: This is an easy answer right? RUUNA and KOUMI: Yes, of course! callme: AMERICA! A-To-J: Is there any venue where you would like to perform? MIMORI: We research a lot of festivals because we want to perform at them… but one of them that seemed fun was South by Southwest. RUUNA: We heard it’s done in the middle of the city and music is flowing in the streets so we want to participate in such American festivals. We also want to perform at Japan Expo where they celebrate Japanese culture. A-To-J: What can your US fans do to help you? MIMORI: The number one thing is to listen to music. We put a lot of hard work into the album and I think it can be enjoyed all over the world. I want them to listen to our songs and have fun with us at lives. RUUNA: We just recently released our album and we wanted overseas fans to also enjoy the songs so we titled them all in English. We have Japanese lyrics of course but we also mixed in English lyrics. Even though the Japanese may be difficult, we made it so overseas fans can enjoy the album as well. A-To-J: Is there anything you’d like to do with overseas fans outside of performing? MIMORI: Yes, I have something! From when I was little, I loved comedy dramas. I watched dramas such as the one Miley Cyrus starred in and laughed at them a lot so I want to make comedy dramas with our fans and laugh together. KOUMI: Hannah Montana right? MIMORI: Yes, “Secret Life of Hannah Montana”! Also I like “Austin & Ally”! RUUNA: I want to introduce our fans to Japanese culture at our fan meetings by wearing kimono and doing Japanese tea. MIMORI: Or eating “nagashi somen”! (Or Flowing Somen. More information can be found here.) A-To-J: Besides performing is there anything else you’d want to do while in the US? KOUMI: I want to go to Hollywood where that one thing is… (Gestures a wide rectangular object) A-To-J: The Hollywood sign? MIMORI: Yeah, we want to go there and… “Photo!” KOUMI: I also want to go to Universal Studio Hollywood! MIMORI: If anything, I really want to go to the festivals we’ve been talking about. I want us to enjoy music there as well. KOUMI and RUUNA: Yes, definitely! RUUNA: I want to conquer all of the food in America. MIMORI: Ah, steak! A-To-J: Is there any other American food you like? MIMORI: Hamburger! RUUNA: Yes, hamburger! MIMORI: The three of us has gone to eat hamburgers before and it was delicious so we want to know the taste from the home of hamburgers. RUUNA: “Big burger!” A-To-J: Out of Japanese foods is there anything you would recommend foreigners try? MIMORI: Sukiyaki! RUUNA: Sukiyaki! KOUMI: Unagi!! “Do you know Unagi?” RUUNA: Maybe “yuba”? (tofu skin) KOUMI and MIMORI: Yuba?? (Laughs) MIMORI: There is something called “harakomeshi” from the Miyagi prefecture we come from. A well-known dish there is “harakomeshi” and its rice cooked with some salmon and roe. It’s very well-known and delicious. RUUNA: It’s a type of “takikomi gohan” (rice cooked with seasonings and different ingredients) A-To-J: Can you tell us any funny stories from when you were performing? MIMORI: There is something funny that happened! During our release event, my shoe fell off and broke. For 3 songs after that I danced with one shoe missing! A-To-J: Did you change your shoe after that? MIMORI: We couldn’t fix that shoe so we bought new shoes afterwards! (Laughs) A-To-J: Have you had any challenging experiences while performing? MIMORI: Out of our dances, we tried out doing Latin Pop style. It was a “groove” that we didn’t experience before so the dance was hard and it was hard to be synchronized. A-To-J: You mentioned liking video games and anime, what is your favorite video game? MIMORI: I like a lot of different games right now but… the game I thought of when composing “just trust” was Final Fantasy! Recently I’ve been playing a lot of Sengoku Basara. I also like playing Mario Kart and Smash Brothers so I want to play with people overseas! A-To-J: We like games so we play those games often as well! MIMORI: We might be going against each other in one of those games! Please be gentle if that happens (Laughs) KOUMI: I like Metal Gear Solid! RUUNA: I like Taiko no Tatsujin, I play those kinds of games often. A-To-J: It’s not a game that is in the US so we have to import it to play it. MIMORI: So we need to bring it from Japan if we want to play it with overseas fans! We have a lot of these games so we’ll bring them over! A-To-J: What are some of your favorite anime? MIMORI: I have a lot of favorite anime... I’ve been watching CLAMP’s “xxxHolic” as well as “Inu x Boku SS”, it’s kind of a minor anime… but an anime I loved from when I was little is “Ojamajo Doremi” and it’s been the center of me. Do you know those anime? A-To-J (Teepu and Manuel): Not those specific ones… A-To-J (Tiffany): I know of them and I have many friends that love anime as well. MIMORI: Maybe everyone knows Gundam or Evangelion more? Because I love those anime too as well as “Sousei no Aquarion”! I also like the iDOLM@STER. RUUNA: We have all watched “Precure” as well as kids. A-To-J: What are some of your favorite fashion brands? KOUMI: I like “OPENING CEREMONY” and “Marc Jacobs”! A-To-J: What is your ultimate goal in Japan? You ultimate accomplishment? MIMORI: Like a dome tour? RUUNA: In Japan, the “dome tour” has to be the biggest ultimate goal and we would like a lot of people in Japan to listen to our music. A-To-J: Moving forward, what are your goals for next year? RUUNA: Next year’s goal for callme has to be performing overseas. Like we said, we want to go to places like Japan Expo or South by Southwest to deliver our music to people overseas. A-To-J: Please give us a message for your overseas fans. RUUNA: callme hasn’t done any overseas lives yet but we want to make opportunities where overseas fans such as ones in Los Angeles, can listen and watch us perform live. We also just released our new album, “who is callme”, and we would like to convey our thoughts to as many people so please give it a listen! A-To-J: Lastly is there anything that A-To-J can do to help promote callme? RUUNA: We would like you to recommend it to others! MIMORI: We want you to share your opinions and review the album so you can share it with other people, whether it is good or bad. [Editor’s Note: Our review of their album can be found here] RUUNA: Lastly, please love this album a lot! The first half of our interview with callme can be found here! Being given the opportunity to interview them shortly after that was an immense honor. We hope that you enjoy the interview as much as we did. They are a very fun and unique group who we suspect you can expect great things out of. callme released their debut album on the 28th of October this year. They consist of three members who were in Dorothy Little Happy: Ruuna Akimoto, Mimori Tominaga and Koumi Hayasaka. Their defining feature as an idol group is the fact that they are completely self-produced. They have a very unique sound that has a lot of inspiration from video games and anime. Their first album is a testament to their talent, and shows us that they have a very bright future. A-To-J: Hello! Thank you for this interview. To start, please Introduce Yourselves. callme: Hello we are…. callme!! Nice to meet you! A-To-J: What made you decide to make callme? RUUNA: This year, all three of us graduated high school. So as a graduation project, we formed callme. A-To-J: What is the meaning behind the name ‘callme’? KOUMI: My name is Koumi… RUUNA: I’m Ruuna… MIMORI: and I’m Mimori… RUUNA: We took the first part of our names to make “callme” (ko+ru+mi) A-To-J: How did you feel about the first time you performed as callme? KOUMI: At the time, we always performed with 5 people. Once we started performing with just the 3 of us, the formations were difficult to make it look good compared to doing it with 5 people. There were so many first experiences so we were a bit confused. However we were able to have fun doing the performance. A-To-J: You have a very unique sound in your music. Where do you draw your inspiration from? MIMORI: I’m in charge of composing the music. I really love anime, vocaloid, manga, games… and when I’m playing games, I think of what kind of songs I would want to make. Out of that, I realized the fun in composing and I base off my favorite sounds off of things like anime. KOUMI: I really like overseas artists and Maroon 5 was visiting Japan at the time so we all went to go see their live. We watched the live and studied them so we link that to the songs we compose as well. A-To-J: Did anything surprise you about your first performance back in April? KOUMI: Yes! MIMORI: When we did our first one-man live in April, we only had 3 original songs. So to get more original songs in time for the performance, we were surprised when we were told to make 10 new songs! We somehow did it and realized if humans try their hardest, they can do anything. A-To-J: What is your favorite song on the album “Who is callme?” KOUMI: I like the song “Precious”. I rap in English in the song. I wrote the lyrics for it. It was my first song that had a lot of English in it. I think it made a great opportunity for people outside of Japan, such as people in Los Angeles and other overseas countries, to listen to the song. So that’s why I enjoy the song! MIMORI: My favorite song is “Just Trust”. This song was inspired by games. I composed the song when I was thinking how its ilke playing an RPG. The theme of the song is “new beginning from an ending” so I think people that like games will understand the song. RUUNA: My favorite song is the title song, “step by step”. The lyric “step by step” is repeated throughout the song so I think people overseas will be able to remember it easier so I will love for them listen to it! A-To-J: If you had to describe your sound of the song “Precious” to someone who hadn’t heard it before, how would you describe it? KOUMI: I want them to pay attention to the theme of the song which is the warmth or love from people and its romantic lyrics A-To-J: Which song was the most fun to work on? MIMORI: Song that was most fun to work on… Well there’s a song called “I’m Alone” and it was fun in different ways. This song is a breakup song but we have never experienced a breakup before… We were thinking how to understand the feelings of a breakup so we simulated breakups within the members. (Laughs) We pretended to be girlfriend and boyfriend and broke up… RUUNA: We made situations as if we were in a drama and made the song so it was pretty fun. A-To-J: What is your favorite song to perform live? MIMORI: This has to be the title song, “step by step” because it gets hyped up. When the audience cheers for us, they sing a part of the song that goes “Oh-eh-oh oh oh~” with us. I feel the unity and it makes it very fun! A-To-J: Which song was the most challenging to work on? RUUNA: We have a song called “Be Myself” and it was the hardest song of the album. We hadn’t worked on the lyrics all together since the debut single. The theme of the song was “life” and it was such a grand theme. We couldn’t agree with one thing and so it took the most time to write the lyrics. Till the very end there were many different ideas and we worked hard on the song. A-To-J: As leader, are there any challenges that you never expected, Ruuna-san? RUUNA: All of us in callme are O blood type. Same age and O blood type so we’re a bunch of free spirited people. It’s great that we’re all different but our opinions don’t get together well often… So it’s hard to gather all the good parts from each of us, every time. But we do try to make it up by working hard to make something great, so I think its fine. A-To-J: Mimori-san, where did you learn to compose music? MIMORI: I started composing as a hobby and at the time I was imitating my favorite songwriter as I was composing my music. There were a lot of things I didn’t know about composing when I started doing it for callme. Our arranger taught me a lot of things such as DTM (Desktop Music) and I’m using that knowledge for composing. A-To-J: Did you ever think that you’d be able consistently compose your own music when you first entered into the industry? MIMORI: I didn’t think I would be composing in the beginning. However, as I entered this industry, I started love music more and felt that it was really fun. Then I started wanting to make my own music and started composing so I didn’t think I would be doing this when I first entered into the industry. A-To-J: Koumi-san, the choreography you do flows really nicely. What kinds of styles or people inspire you? KOUMI: Specifically, there’s a Korean group called “2NE1” and they really enjoy their lives. Instead of trying to only synchronize with the rest of the members, I can feel that that each member enjoys performing and that makes their fans enjoy the live as well. That is what I felt when I went to go see their live and it made me feel how important that is so I use it as reference. A-To-J: You’re also pretty skilled in English. Why did you decide to learn English, of all the language choices you had? KOUMI: I liked songs in English and also movies in English so I wanted to understand English. I also wanted to communicate with many people overseas and wanted to share our cultures so I decided to study English. A-To-J: Are there any specific languages the members of callme would want to learn besides English? KOUMI: I want to learn Spanish. I think Spanish is spoken in many countries so I wanted to expand in countries that don’t just speak English but Spanish as well. MIMORI: I want to learn French. I can’t speak much English yet but I want to learn many things before going overseas. RUUNA: I want to learn Chinese. I really like fried rice and I heard there are Chinatowns all over the world so I want to visit them. I feel like I need to learn Chinese in order to do so, so I want to learn the language. A-To-J: Have you ever thought about singing in any of these other languages? RUUNA: We want to make a song with many different languages and sing it at many different countries. A-To-J: Being self-produced is very uncommon, especially from people who come from idol groups. How do you feel like this unique feature will interest more people? MIMORI: Since we make things on our own, we share the feelings we put into our songs and I think we can convey that from our hearts, therefore I think we can also reach their heart with our music. A-To-J: What kinds of challenges do you face, being completely self-produced? RUUNA: Since we make our music, we get attached to each song so it’s hard to see the song objectively. We try to work this out with the three of us; for example if I, RUUNA, make the lyrics for a song, I have the other two look at it objectively for me and get advice.
